Pharaoh’s Oppression and Israel’s Despair

     Pharaoh’s Oppression and Israel’s Despair                       (Exodus 5:10-18)

--

10 So the taskmasters of the people and their foremen went out and spoke to the people, saying, “Thus says Pharaoh, ‘I am not going to give you any straw.

--

11 ‘You go and get straw for yourselves wherever you can find it, but none of your labor will be reduced.’ ”

--

12 So the people scattered through all the land of Egypt to gather stubble for straw.

--

13 The taskmasters pressed them, saying, “Complete your work quota, your daily amount, just as when you had straw.”

--

14 Moreover, the foremen of the sons of Israel, whom Pharaoh’s taskmasters had set over them, were beaten and were asked, “Why have you not completed your required amount either yesterday or today in making brick as previously?”

--

15 Then the foremen of the sons of Israel came and cried out to Pharaoh, saying, “Why do you deal this way with your servants?

--

16 “There is no straw given to your servants, yet they keep saying to us, ‘Make bricks!’ And behold, your servants are being beaten; but it is the fault of your own people.”

--

17 But he said, “You are lazy, very lazy; therefore you say, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to the LORD.’

--

18 “So go now and work; for you will be given no straw, yet you must deliver the quota of bricks.”

          Pressure Exposes the Battle

God never promised that obedience would make life easier overnight. Sometimes obedience makes life harder before it makes life better—because He is changing us and preparing to display His power.

* ++Pharaoh’s new order made an already hard job impossible: “No more straw… but the same number of bricks.” The laborers now had to find their own straw while still meeting the full quota.

* ++ This was bigger than bricks. Two kingdoms were colliding. Moses had said, “Thus says the LORD.” Pharaoh answered, “Thus says Pharaoh.” Whose voice would be obeyed?

* ++ Pharaoh’s cruelty was strategic. He wanted to crush Israel’s new hope and exhaust them so they would stop thinking about God’s promises. Pressure reveals what we truly believe.

     Pressure Reveals a Slave Mentality

               (Exodus 5:15-16)

Pressure doesn’t create our faith,it reveals it. When life gets hard, we discover whether we still think like slaves or have learned to run to our Heavenly Father.

--

* ++The foremen did not go to Moses or cry out to the Lord. They went back to Pharaoh—the only master they had ever known—and pleaded for relief .

* ++Three times they called themselves “your servants,” but God had declared them “My people.” Egypt was still deeply rooted in their hearts.

* ++ Our position in Christ changes instantly, but learning to think and live like sons and daughters takes a lifetime. Pressure exposes where we still run to old masters.

     The Old Master Never Delivers

     (Exodus 5:17-18)

Old masters always overpromise and underdeliver. Only Jesus gives what He promises; rest for the weary and true freedom..

--

* ++Pharaoh answered with contempt: “You are lazy, very lazy… So go now and work; for you will be given no straw, yet you must deliver the quota of bricks” He mocked their desire to worship.

* ++The foremen were asking their slave master to set them free. Old masters take, demand, and promise—but they never deliver.

* ++Sin promises freedom but produces slavery. It promises satisfaction but leaves us empty. Jesus says the opposite: “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

When life gets harder, where do your feet take you?

What we believe about God determines

where we run when life falls apart.

--

* ++We all have our own “Pharaoh.” Some run to worry, anger, control, approval, work, money, entertainment, or old sins. The question is not whether we run, the question is where we run.

* ++God did not reject Israel because they ran back to Pharaoh. He patiently taught them to run to Him instead. He is doing the same with us—one step, one trial, one act of faith at a time.

* ++He is changing us from people who think like slaves into sons and daughters who know our Father is enough. May your feet always carry you to Christ—the only Master who truly sets people free.
